The term “fitness” is defined as the state or quality of being physically fit and healthy. The definition of fitness has evolved considerably since its introduction in 1950, from its original meaning of “physical attractiveness.” Today, fitness is defined as the body’s ability to perform a specific function and adapt to different circumstances. This definition has lead to the creation of a global fitness industry. In addition, it has become associated with various aspects of physical attractiveness, such as stamina and aerobic capacity.
The American College of Sports Medicine defines physical fitness as “a state of well-being that includes the four pillars of physical fitness: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, and flexibility.” Other factors that influence health include nutrition, rest, and mental health. Although many people assume that being fit means having a muscular physique, the truth is that fitness can be achieved through physical activity and a balanced diet. A healthy body is also a happier and more fulfilled life.
Exercising regularly is a good way to relieve stress. Regular exercise also stimulates the production of feel-good chemicals in the brain. Furthermore, it promotes better sleep patterns, which are essential for good health. Therefore, regular exercise can help avoid daytime sleepiness. Even though the benefits of physical activity cannot be attributed to its cure for cancer, it can help prevent or manage many other illnesses. The key to getting the most out of it is to be physically fit.
The President’s Council on Fitness and Health is created. It meets every year in Washington, DC. In 1993, the Council holds a Strategic Planning Forum to develop recommendations for improving the physical fitness of Americans. It also launches the Silver Eagle Award to promote fitness among senior citizens. In 1994, HHS Secretary Shalala releases the Nolan Ryan Fitness Guide to every American. In 1996, the Surgeon General releases a report on the relationship between physical activity and health. Several new members are appointed to the Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition in April.
In the year 1965, the President’s Council on Fitness and Sports is created. It is a cabinet-level committee that focuses on public awareness about the benefits of physical fitness and sports. The Council also sponsors the National Youth Sports Program for underprivileged youth. Its goals are primarily to encourage recreation and park officials to begin fitness programs for youth. It also issues a physical fitness postage stamp. Fitness and Health and Physical Activity – A Growing Relationship
As physical activity levels in schools continue to rise, more people are engaging in physical activities. Exercises such as walking, running, and brisk walking have been found to improve health. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has even released Physical Activity Guidelines for American Citizens. The authors of the review conclude that the relation between physical activity and health is not linear, but rather dose-response. In fact, the results of the CDC-sponsored systematic review found that there are relatively few studies that provide dose-response data.
